Thursday, Jan. 29

Highlights:

  • For Literacy, we continued practicing our paragraph writing. Ask me what my paragraph was about and the details I included.

  • During Math, we continued our learning on multiplication and division. Ask me to write the fact family for the equation 3x5=15
  • For Science, we used the brand new iPads to research a natural disaster. Then we created a visual journal page about it. Ask me what disaster I chose and a safety precaution that can be taken.




  • In Art, we learned about optical illusion art and how it is connected to Science. We then created our own!

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we worked on writing a paragraph based on our opinion. We have been working hard to use the hamburger model for our writing. Ask me what my paragraph was about.
  • In Math, we learned about how we can tell stories from data we collect.
  • Today in Music, we practiced our song This is Me and then had music sharing. Ask me what people shared today. 
  • For Science, we discussed and created a visual journal page for different natural events. Ask me what are some examples.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we learned about the prefixes in-, im-, and non. Ask me what are examples of words for each. 
  • For Math, we did a geometry show what you know. Ask me how I felt about it.
  • During Science, we started our next unit about Earth's Surface. We learned about the layers of the earth and did a fun plasticine activity to help us remember what they were. Ask me to show you my earth model and to tell you what the layers inside are.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy we worked on our uppercase cursive letters. Ask me to show you the ones we did.
  • In Math, we learned about the difference between first hand and second hand data. Then we collected first hand data by doing our own survey. Ask me what the difference is between the two types of data and what my survey question was.
  • For Art, we did an art appreciation activity. We looked at four different Canadian paintings and wrote about what we saw, felt, and noticed about the art. Ask me which one I chose.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we talked about the closing sentence of a paragraph. Then we wrote a paragraph answering the question, would you rather travel to the future or back to the past? Ask me what I chose and what details I included.

  • In Math, we learned about bar graphs and when we use them.
  • Today for Science, we talked about what computer science is and how it connects to computational thinking. Ask me what are examples I came up with and the steps I chose to break down a task.
  • In Health, we learned about the importance of why we should eat different foods and stay hydrated. After, we designed our own water bottles. Ask me what I included.

  • In Literacy, we learned about synonyms and antonyms. Ask me what the difference is between each one and examples.
  • For Math, we learned about dot plots and line plots. Ask me how they work and what we use them for.
  • We had our reading groups in the afternoon. Ask me which ones I did today.
  • In Social Studies, we finished our culture visual journal page.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy we learned about the prefix dis-. Ask me what are some examples of words that have this prefix.
  • For Phys. Ed, we practiced shooting. Ask me what BEEF stands for.


  • In Math, we learned about the relationship between polygons. We also reviewed how we find the vertices, sides, right angle and parallel lines in a polygon.
  • Today in Social Studies, we worked on a visual journal page about our own cultures. Ask me what I included in mine.

Reminder:

  • Fun Lunch is on Thursday for the students that ordered.
  • Please return the consent forms that were sent earlier this month for our upcoming learning in Health.

Highlights:
  • This morning in Literacy we continued to learn about paragraphs. We talked about the juiciest part of a paragraph which is the middle. Ask me what relevant details I included in my writing.
  • In Music, we did a song listening activity where we had to colour different things based on the sound. For example, we coloured red if we heard a guitar and a different colour if it was loud or soft. 
  • For Math, we learned about how we can sort polygons based on different rules. Ask me what are some examples of rules we sorted by.
  • In Social Studies, we did a check in on the topics we have learned so far such as the Metis people and the early settlers of Alberta. Ask me what has been my favourite thing to learn about so far.

Highlights:

  • For Literacy, we read the story What Pet Should I Get? After we wrote a paragraph on what pet I think is best for me. Ask me what I picked and my reasons.
  • In Phys. Ed, we practiced two types of passing, bounce pass and chess pass. 

  • During Math, we did a Math check in. 
  • For Science, we finished up our unit on energy and forces. Ask me what was my favourite thing that I learned.
  • In Social Studies, we learned about different symbols for Alberta. Then we talked about empathy and diversity for others.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we started to learn about paragraphs and how it can make our writing easier to read. Ask me how a paragraph is connected to a hamburger.
  • For Math, we learned about polygons and how they can be sorted as regular and irregular. Ask me what does a shape need to be in order to be called a polygon.
  • We had our reading groups in the afternoon. Ask me which ones I went to. 
  • In Health, we did a survey to check in on how we feel at school. 
  • After, we had some time to practice our typing skills! We have really improved since the start of the year.

Highlights:

  • For Literacy, we continued reading A Rover's Story. Ask me what is happening so far and what feelings Res has started to develop. We also learned about the prefix re-, ask me what are some examples of words that have this prefix.
  • In Phys. Ed, we started our basketball unit. We practiced dribbling today and then had a chance to shoot at the nets at the end.

  • In Math, we learned about the different types of lines that we find in shapes and in the world. After, we went on a walk around the school looking for different examples of each line. Ask me to tell you the difference between parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines.
  • Today in Social Studies, we learned about immigration in Alberta today and also discussed why people might choose to immigrate here. 

Reminders:

  • As the weather is warming up and the ice is melting around the school, students are reminded to wear waterproof boots and have an extra pair of socks and pants in their backpack.
